Until
quite recently, the only way to significantly alter the shape,
colour or size of a tooth was through the use of porcelain
or metal crowns. This involved removing large amounts of the
tooth structure around the entire tooth. With the arrival
of new bonding technology, combined with the latest in laser
dentistry, thin layers of composite resin can now be permanently
bonded to the fronts of teeth, eliminating the need to remove
large amounts of the tooth.
These custom-made composite shells are commonly called Veneers.
They are used to fix chipped, cracked or worn teeth or to
cover badly stained teeth. They are much more tooth conservative
than crowns and offer a stronger and more cost effective alternative
to porcelain.
Composite veneers can last for many years, depending on how
well you take care of them. They are resistant to stains and
chipping, however, it is important to maintain your regular
oral hygiene and to avoid bad habits such as biting your nails.
You should also make sure that you brush regularly, especially
if you consume staining foods such as red wine or tea or coffee.
You should also ensure that you visit Garry Johnson Dental
regularly for routine cleaning and examinations. These simple
precautions will help ensure that your veneers will last a
long time and keep looking as good as new.
