Keeping your gums healthy; a guide from our dental Coorparoo team

While many people assume that dentists are all about keeping teeth healthy, we also have another motive; keeping your gums healthy!

Unhealthy gums can lead to discomfort, bleeding and even tooth loss. Not only that but, if you have been diagnosed with gum disease and are not having it treated, this can lead to a myriad of secondary health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancers and it can even increase your risks of having a stroke. So, it is vital to keep your gums in good condition.

And, of course, our dental Coorparoo can help. When you attend checkups with our team, through our assessments, we can identify problematic plaque and remove it. This will help to keep your gums and teeth in top-notch shape and your smile white. Great!

But what can you do to help keep your gums healthy? Here, our dental Coorparoo provides some top tips on how to keep periodontal disease at bay and help your gums to stay healthy.

Brush, brush, brush!

Of course, you know the drill when it comes to brushing.

Our dental Coorparoo recommends brushing your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day with fluoride-based toothpaste. To maximise gum health, you will want to use interdental brushes to get into those hard-to-reach areas. We also advise you to not rinse your mouth when you have finished brushing as this can remove that all-important fluoride from your mouth, which is essential to keeping your teeth and gums in good condition.

Toothbrushes

When it comes to choosing toothbrushes to maximise oral health, we recommend using electric options versus manual.

And, as these brushes come with interchangeable heads, you should replace them every 3-4 months. This is not only because the bristles get worn down and thus are less effective at removing plaque, but because degraded brush heads can damage your gums.

Antiseptic mouthwash

A key factor in keeping your gums healthy is to keep the number of bacteria in your mouth down.

One way to do this is by using an antiseptic mouthwash. You can buy these over the counter in most pharmacies, but, if you or your family members have a history of gum disease, then our team may be able to prescribe a stronger mouthwash.

Balance

We are dentists and so we advocate the diets that have the least sugar in them!

As you can imagine, to maintain healthy gums and generally good physical health, it is wise to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Checkups

We go on about them for a reason!

One of the easiest things you can do to keep your gums and oral health in good condition is to attend checkups with our team twice a year.

This will allow us to identify problems with your gums early and remove plaque that may exacerbate gum issues in the future.
