Unsure how to make dental care fun for your kids? Tips from our family dental team at Brisbane
A milestone for any parent, when your baby begins teething, it is important to know what steps need to be taken to ensure that your child grows up with good oral health habits. Occurring at about the age of 12 months, once a tooth has begun erupting, it can start to develop plaque and so you will need to start seeing our dental team at Brisbane to ensure that your child’s newly forming teeth are cared for correctly.
At Brisbane Laser Dentist, our Coorparoo family dental team will advise you on how to look after your baby’s teeth; everything from brushing techniques, to suitable foods to avoid, up to pain relief (teething is painful!), we can provide it all. After all, like you, we want your children to have healthy teeth and as prevention is better than cure, we believe in starting these habits as early as possible.
But what are some of the steps that our Coorparoo family dental team recommends for making dental care at home easy for babies and young children?
As a parent, you will need to take the time to brush your baby’s tooth or teeth and as they grow, you can show them how to brush their teeth correctly; again, the technique is something that our Coorparoo family dental team can help with.
But supervision is necessary for all young children when they brush their teeth; this not only keeps them safe, but it also allows you to check that they are brushing correctly.
We know how hard it can be to get toddlers to settle for an afternoon nap, but one thing we have to recommend to parents is that you do not allow them to nap while drinking juice, squash or anything with sugar in it.
The prolonged exposure to sugar can cause the thin fluoride on your child’s teeth to break down, which can lead to decay. So, if you need to give them something to drink while they nap, stick to water or formula.
As much of a cliche as it sounds, you can make dental care at home more fun for your children by making it a game. Why not find a suitable song to sing while they brush (it will need to be about 3 minutes) or why not devise a rhyme for them to learn to help them clean their teeth? If you are struggling to do so, there are a myriad of websites that can offer you appropriate songs or rhymes and our team at Brisbane Laser Dentist can recommend games too.
The line between toys and toothbrushes has become somewhat blurred, which we think is a great thing for children’s dental care!
If your child has a favourite cartoon character, why not invest in a toothbrush of this character or purchase a toothbrush which can time the brushing period by itself? You can also get toothbrushes that light up and come with a range of different heads, to ensure that the teeth get brushed correctly. Brilliant!
