Do you need to have a tooth removed? Are you worried about the long-term effects of the procedure itself?
Don’t be! While many people dread having to have a tooth removed, it is now such a painless and simple procedure that many patients are surprised once it is over. Thanks in part to the advancement of extraction tools and pain relief. Regardless of the cause of the extraction (decay, overcrowding or to make room for orthodontic work), the process will be straightforward and the recovery will be swift.

At Brisbane Laser Dentist, our dentist in Coorparoo knows all there is to know about painless extractions and can ensure that the transition is smooth. Using our cutting-edge laser technology can make even the trickiest extractions simple, while they can also speed up healing and promote better oral health overall by eradicating harmful bacteria. Perfect!

If you have never had an oral extraction before, you will probably have some questions. Here, our dentist in Coorparoo answers 5 FAQs we receive from patients.

What is involved in a tooth extraction?

In a simple extraction, our dentist in Coorparoo will inject the area to numb it and, using our top of the range tools, will remove the tooth, hopefully in one gentle tug.

If a surgical extraction is needed (due to the position of the tooth or extensive decay) we will need to use our lasers and some X-Rays to ensure that the tooth is fully removed, but this will also be painless and straightforward- it may take a bit longer though!

Will I need stitches?

As our lasers can cauterise the extraction site, stitches will probably not be needed.
However, if you have undertaken a surgical extraction and the incisions are deep, then we may need to use stitches to prevent infections.

What is involved in aftercare?

Aftercare involves eating soft-foods, cautious brushing and no use of mouthwashes for a few days!

If you need to take pain relief, we suggest taking paracetamol and avoiding medications that can thin the blood, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Gargle salt water as required, to keep the site clean while also applying clean gauze if the extraction site bleeds.

If you have any queries about aftercare following an extraction, talk to our team.

Will the extraction site become infected?

It is unlikely, however, there are some signs to keep an eye out for.

If you are experiencing enhanced discomfort, swelling, a foul taste or odour emanating from the site while also feeling feverish, speak to our team immediately.

What restorative options do I have?

Following an extraction (barring for orthodontic purposes) you will probably want to fill that gap.

At Brisbane Laser Dentist, we can offer you dental implants, a fitted bridge or even dentures (full or partial). If you want to have oral implants, we will need to discuss and assess your suitability, as they require a strong, thick jaw bone to be inserted into.
